The first chapter of Deleuze and Guattari’s A Thousand Plateaus is very emblematic of French post-structuralism in that it’s not actually that conceptually complex but is easily ...

A Thought About Readability

So, I started reading A Thousand Plateaus recently. Which is an infamously long, dense, free-associative book. It is A Lot. I certainly wouldn’t claim that it’s particularly easy to read (certainly not compared to philosophers who are really great stylists like Benjamin) and I imagine if you come into it without any previous experience with this sort of French poststructuralist stuff it might be a struggle to parse the concepts.

Delicacy is the domain of ghosts. Folks down here, feet planted on the ground, we can’t afford delicacy, we can’t hold it in our thick, clumsy hands lest we break it.

soundcloud.com/goatytapes/drunk-elk-quintessence So there’s this song called ‘Quintessence’ by this Tasmanian band called ‘Drunk Elk’. The only instrumentation is bass and a cheap keyboard while a man sings an oddly mournful song, constantly wavering in pitch.

Bully, Coward, Victim: Roy Cohn's AIDS Memorial Quilt Square

Roy Cohn was a truly horrible man, someone responsible for the establishment of the modern far-right in the same way Reagan was. A cutthroat prosecutor who was instrumental in McCarthyism, a man who trained both Trump and Rupert Murdoch, a Jew who sent Jewish communists to the electric chair, a gay man responsible for the death of many of his own, an AIDS victim who insisted till his dying day it was liver cancer.

This is the fundamental reading list, so to speak, for this blog. Any posts that are engaging with specific writing will have its own mini bibliography, but here I collect both all those and anything else that is an influence on me or which I think is worth reading.
