This album is not nearly as stripped down and weird as people want you to think. It's not like Swwon or something, instead it's just a kinda underproduced synthpop album. It's still pretty good though.

The Vanderslice songs are okay, the Darnielle songs are fantastic.

Not quite as good as TCG, but a good complement. TCG is a monochromatic late winter album while this is a more colorful and more springy one. Masher might be the best Mountain Goats song.

Marillion - Clutching at Straws album prog good EP
Now much more open-minded I can appreciate the smoother, poppier approach to prog, the unique things this band does, and particularly the raw and emotionally fragile tone. Good stuff.
IQ - Dark Matter album prog good
Taking a stab at getting more into neo-prog, which I kinda turned my nose at during my teen prog years. This is pretty solid, nice and energetic and very poppy in a good way without sacrificing the atmosphere or emotion. A good example of the Genesis+pop+feelings formula of neo-prog.

The Legendary Pink Dots - The Maria Dimension psych folk album good
I had thought this band was more an early industrial thing like NWN and Coil but it's not that and not really like anything else. Beautifully psychy, with a genuinely surreal and mystical atmosphere, more folk than rock, sometimes ominous but broadly with a real astral beauty. You could consider Ka-Spel sort of a flip of David Tibet, Tibet the mystic alternating between ranting and despair and Ka-Spel the lysergic troubador spinning tales of seeing beyond the stars. Really cool and highly unique.
